Despite the above image giving the appearance of the contrary, I’ve never been a big drinker. You would think that living in Munich for five years would make me a beer drinker, but not so much (though I am now somewhat of a beer connoisseur – don’t even try to get me to drink the swill that is produced outside of Europe). I hate that dehydrated feeling from drinking alcohol, so I tend to skip it in most forms.
However, the fact that Malaysia is a Muslim country, which makes alcohol reasonably hard to come by (it is a very tolerant Muslim country, so it’s not impossible to find and buy alcohol), coupled with my stockpiling tendencies, means that every time we return from an international trip, we stop by the duty free shop (mark-up/tax outside the duty free shop is around 300%) for our legally allotted one bottle per person – “just in case” I have some sort of blow-out party or I want a gin and tonic in the evening.
Alex is pretty much the only one who drinks anything (he likes whiskey), but that doesn’t stop me from buying Absolut Vodka, Tanquary Gin, Bailey’s, Captian Morgan’s Rum, basically every type of liquor I can think of to concoct simple cocktails. And that’s how we end up with a cabinet filled with un-drunk alcohol. I guess we’ll be shipping this collection off to our next home (along with the bottle of Vino Verde from our 2003 Portugal trip, and that bottle of almond liquor from our 2001 Sicily trip, and all the other “special” bottles from when we lived in Munich). Did I mention my stockpiling problem?
Please help me get rid of some of this stuff! What’s your favorite cocktail?
